Yaupon Steel - Drop Bar Mountain Bike - All Terrain Bike

We always say the best bikepacking bikes are the ones you reach for on any given trail ride. The Yaupon is about making big possibilities into reality. An adaptable geometry designed for dirt drop handlebars or mountain handlebars and broad component compatibility will leave you enjoying this All Terrain Bike on everything from singletrack to multi-day bikepacking or a long gravel grind.

The Yaupon stands out from other bikes in the all terrain bike category with its 120mm fork capability and big tire clearances. Our slacker head tube angle and longer reach are designed for use with a shorter stem and wider bars. A true dirt drop MTB! We’ve been thoughtful to balance the geometry for off-road riding and singletrack. Throw on a rigid fork and you’ve got an ideal setup for ultra-endurance and racing routes like Tour Divide or the Unbound XL. The Yaupon Steel and Yaupon Titanium represent our thoughts on what makes the most comfortable all day bikepacking bike that can still shred on any trail ride. Scroll down to order or see more.

    • The Yaupon steel is at home tackling technical trails, but foremost it’s meant for the longest rides in the most comfortable and fun way possible!

    • A slack 68º head tube finds the flow in rough terrain.

    • A steep seat tube angle and other geo numbers combine to keep the front end planted under difficult climbs.

    • A balanced bottom bracket is positioned to bring out the rest of the geometry and plant the bike in corners whether seated or floating.

    • The bike is spirited out of the saddle and rather huckable, but the comfort of the design allows for a long day seated.

    • The wheelbase offers great maneuverability picking lines on the trail and threading through tight corners.

    • Smooth and predictable compliance from Chumba Oversized Select Double Butted Tubing, built of the best tubing available.

    • Made in USA quality, built in house in Austin, TX.

    • Seat-stays are custom diameter to each frame size for the smoothest ride.

    • Chumba Oversized Select Double Butted Tubing and PMW stainless steel sliding dropouts, mean this bike will exceed your expectations and provide years of reliable trail service. Oversized tubing yields larger tube miters for strength.

    • Clean thoughtful cable routing w/ stainless steel braze-ons. Includes stainless top tube bag mounts, DT framebag mount & cargo cage mounts under down tube.

    • Flawless frame miters, all tubes are heat sunk and argon purged when welded to prevent distortion and material thinning.

    • Machined head tube for tapered or straight forks.

    • Many frame customizations available.

  • Now available in two tubesets! Our Chumba Oversized Select Double Butted Tubeset has always been trusted for trail riding, bikepacking. Prized for its value, dent resistance & balance of compliance/strength.

For those looking for a more race performance tubeset we offer a Velospec Heat Treated (USA made) Tubeset. Available in the frame customizations as an add-on. For lighter frame weight and increased performance characteristics. The tubing is air hardened at weld zones which increases its fatigue strength and resistance to external forces. While heat treatment adds strength, these tubes offer increased elongation % for a compliant ride. The stuff of magic? We think so.

  • The Yaupon steel is designed to be extremely compatible with a wide range of tire sizes, hub options and fork lengths. Frames come with dropout inserts, rear axle and seatpost clamp.

What is an All Terrain Bike (ATB)? To us it represents a bike that is designed with all terrains in mind. For the Yaupon this means starting from a solid singletrack ready MTB platform and adding various geometry features to make the bike effective to ride on other surfaces. Singletrack, jeep trails and gravel or fire roads, the Yaupon is thought out to be a fun and effective tool for all these formats. Bonus is the ability to swap between drop and mtn handlebars. On any given bikepacking trip you might find yourself on all these different terrains, so the bike should be designed to perform on them all. Yaupon, pronounced (yo-pawn) or (yaa-pn) is a type of evergreen holly tree found throughout the Southeastern US. It is one of only 2 endemic North American plants that can be used as a caffeine source. It also is a burly hill here in Austin, TX where once crested you can enter into one of the most challenging trail systems named Thumper.
