Why Handbuilt?

Upcoming custom dynamo build using a Violet Chris King rear hub and Raceface ARC rims

Riding long days over rough terrain? A more compliant rim will help. Need to shave some weight for high elevation climbs? A lightweight carbon rim is a nice upgrade. Running single speed and want the most efficient pedal stroke possible? A hub with high engagement will feel right at home.

Custom building wheels also gives us the opportunity to tune the ride quality of the wheel to the rider. A rider’s style, weight, and terrain all play significant roles in choosing the right components for a wheelbuild. Sometimes the stock wheels that came on your bike don’t match you as a rider.

When choosing components, we can help inform decisions on strength, weight, hub, spoke count and type of spokes to make sure the wheels fit your type of riding. Many components offer color options to personalize your bike!

Build Quality

The biggest benefit Stoke offers is building up a bombproof wheelset that will keep you rolling for miles and miles. We take a lot of care to make sure all of our wheels are precision built to the highest wheelbuilding standards. This means properly sized spokes, high quality spokes and build materials. We build with super high tolerances, making sure the wheel is balanced and the tension is distributed equally throughout the wheel - uneven tension is main culprit for broken spokes and out of true wheels.

Wheels come pre stressed and set up with tubeless tape and valves, so they’re ready to take out on your next adventure. We can also install rotors, cassettes and tires, and if you’re local, setup your new wheels on your bike.

In addition to the component manufacturer warranties, all Stoke Custom Wheels come with labeled backup spokes, complimentary truing for up to two years and free spoke replacement for broken spokes for up to one year.

Behind the Name

“As a wheelbuilder, I started out of necessity. At the bike shop I worked, wheelbuilding was the one ticket nobody wanted to grab. Being the newest mechanic, I saw the void and quickly learned the trade. I studied Jobst Brandt’s “The Bicycle Wheel” and started building wheels for myself and my friends.

Fast forward a few months later in a conversation with my grandmother where she told me about my great grandfather, who was also a wheel builder and bicycle racer back when wheels were made of wood. This fueled my passion for the craft, and lit the idea for Stoke using his namesake.

Through hundreds of wheelbuilds, I’ve learned to love the art of wheelbuilding and the intricacies involved. Working with riders to personalize their wheelset and elevate their bike brings me a lot of joy.

As a wheelbuilder, I strive to make the best wheel possible by taking no shortcuts and using the highest quality components available, every time.”
